Rikshas: an easy and quick way of traveling. Should be very cheap make sure you barter if the driver speaks English
Uber: Uber works in India and will help avoid a language problem
Delhi train: The Delhi metro is new and very nice! Better than New York subways!
Flying: India is a big place and if you want to venture out of Delhi there are cheap tickets to go from cities
Food
All food will be good! Just be careful because street food can be tempting but never eat it–you will get sick!
If you are unfamiliar with Indian food here are some good options:
Naan- no matter what else you get make sure you order naan or some bread to eat your food with
Shahi paneer- cottage cheese cubes in a buttery curry
Butter chicken/chicken tikka masala- chicken in a creamy curry sauce
Chole/Chana masala – chickpeas with tomato, onion and spices
Navratran Korma- mixed vegetables in a creamy curry
Don’t drink the tap water! Make sure to drink only bottled water. And don’t eat raw vegetables ever–so no salad!
Connaught Place has some good restaurants!
My favorite places to get food, which may not be a norm, is temples–especially any Gurudwara (Sikh temples). Gurudwaras tend to have really good halwa which is an Indian dessert.
Haldiram- a good place to get sweets and street style type food that is safe
My favorite in Delhi! It is the tomb of the Mughual emperor Humanyun.
Red Fort
Misc.
You will need an international adapter
You probably can’t rent a car because the wheel is on the other side of the car
Hindi is the language spoken in Delhi but most people who are educated also speak English. Also India in general is a huge country with hundreds of different languages spoken, so just because Hindi is primarily spoken in Delhi, it is not common everywhere.
Be careful especially if you are a woman! Crime is high, so try to not to take rikshas by yourself and keep belongings safe.
